Mountain State players had just over two months when they were able to place online sports bets through BetLucky. But that ended unexpectedly on March 6.
Now bettors are hoping football season means college football season. Without a pro team in the state, college football is where the action is.
WV sports betting preview: West Virginia University
West Virginia University finished the 2018-19 season with an 8-4 record, 6-3 in the Big 12 Conference.
The Mountaineers are not ranked in the top 25 as they head into the 2019-20 season. WVU has a new head coach, Neal Brown, and there is a new enthusiasm that they will eventually get there.
FanDuel Sportsbook in New Jersey is already posting odds on some key metrics, games and the Big 12 Conference title.
While they may be a long shot to win the title (+12000), there are still some attractive spots to get in the game.
WVU likely to produce a winning season
The Mountaineers fall somewhere in the middle of the pack to win the Big 12 championship at +1800. Oklahoma is the favorite at -123, and Kansas State is the longshot at +3000.
Here are a few more betting opportunities.
WVU regular-season wins:
- Over 5 -145
- Under 5 +125
FanDuel is looking to some big matchups during the 2019-20 college football season. WVU is playing in three of FanDuel’s games of the Year:
- WVU (+3) vs. Baylor (-3)
- Texas Tech (+2.5) vs. WVU (-2.5)
- WVU (+13.5) vs. TCU (-13.5)
WV sports betting preview: Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall finished second in the Conference USA East division with a 9-4 record. Isaiah Green, the Thundering Herd’s quarterback, returns to lead the team to the top of the conference.
Marshall’s chance to win the national championship is unlikely (+25000), but Marshall has more potential for a strong showing in its conference.
Can Marshall overcome the loss of experience?
Based on its success and record from last year, some might expect Marshall to be one of the favorites to win the CUSA championship.
Unfortunately, the Thundering Herd lost a lot of strength on defense, and that translates to questions. And unanswered questions negatively impact odds.
Florida Atlantic is favorited to win the conference championship at +300. Western Kentucky is the underdog at +4800. The Thundering Herd come in somewhere in the middle at +900.
The over/under for regular-season wins is set at 7, with the over at -125 and the under coming in at +105.
Bettors preparing for college football betting in WV
Bettors have not given up all hope that they will get to place those bets at home.
DraftKings Sportsbook seems the logical choice to launch first in WV since it has passed the required regulatory testing. Two other online sportsbooks have also been approved to conduct online betting:
Of course, it really is anyone’s game at this point. Let’s just hope we’ve seen the last of the delays.
Even as they wait, bettors are busy making alternative arrangements.
Some will make the drive to one of the three WV casinos with active sportsbooks:
Others have plans to drive across the northern border into Pennsylvania. There are currently three PA online sportsbooks, with more on deck.
Whether or not there will be live WV online sportsbooks by college football is anyone’s guess. One sure bet, though, is that players will find a way to place a wager on their favorite teams.
