The return of sports is finally in motion. This weekend will feature more betting options at West Virginia sportsbooks since sports came to a halt in March.
It’s been a very difficult few months for everyone, including sports betting operators all over the country. With Mountain State casinos just reopening last Friday, the only bets being placed are with the available online sports betting apps.
While this didn’t affect residents who enjoy wagering from home, it did hurt many of the retail sportsbooks. Only The Greenbrier and Hollywood Casino showcase online platforms at this time.
These mobile apps include:
Now that casinos are slowly opening back up at 50% capacity, the state’s other retail books can begin earning profits.
Of course, the other part of this equation is how many enticing betting options are actually offered. The last couple of months haven’t included many popular markets, thus limiting the amount of action at sportsbooks.
However, some sports have started back up already and several others will join them this weekend.
The UFC has been one of the biggest leagues to prioritize its return. It has held multiple events already, both in Jacksonville, Florida, and most recently, Las Vegas.
Some other sports have gotten back on the field, as well. Bundesliga soccer in Germany hit the pitch on May 16, while KBO baseball and some special golf events have also taken place.
This weekend, bettors have even more options with the PGA Tour and La Liga back in the rotation.
Although the big four American sports aren’t back yet, sportsbooks should have enough options to hold them over for now.
Let’s breakdown the top sports betting markets on the board this weekend at WV books.=
Betting On The PGA Tour
The world’s best golfers take the stage again this weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge and there are special promotions available for WV sports betting customers. The PGA Tour’s first event since postponing all tournaments will take place this weekend from Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
While the tour has been shut down since March, golf fans have had the opportunity to wager on some other golf events.
Last month, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson teamed up with NFL quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. The four competed in The Match: Champions for Charity to raise money for COVID-19 relief funds.
Other golf events have been listed at sportsbooks, too. Golfers like Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, and Dustin Johnson played in the TaylorMade Driving Relief skins game in May.
This weekend marks the return of golf’s top tier in a full capacity. Many of the highest-ranked players in the world are teeing off on Thursday.
Since there hasn’t been any real golf tournaments, or many live sports in general, there is plenty of anticipation around this event. The field is very strong this week, almost like a major was scheduled.
In fact, fans won’t have to look hard for some of the game’s brightest stars. The top three players in the official rankings are actually teeing off together to begin the tournament.
McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Brooks Koepka, the top three respectively, are set to tee off at 2:06 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
Several other popular golfers are poised to win the first tournament back from the stoppage. They include Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Johnson, and Fowler.
WV bettors can place a futures wager, along with many other props through the state’s online sportsbooks. Currently, DraftKings Sportsbook lists the following odds to win the Charles Schwab Challenge:
Odds To Win
- Rory McIlroy +750
- Jon Rahm +1150
- Justin Thomas +1650
- Webb Simpson +2200
- Bryson Dechambeau +2500
- Brooks Koepka +2500
- Dustin Johnson +3000
- Patrick Reed +3000
- Xander Schauffele +3000
- Rickie Fowler +3500
- Scottie Scheffler +3500
- Sungjae Im +3500
Bundesliga Soccer Betting
The Bundesliga has now become a regular staple for sports bettors of late. Without the usual amount of sports around, any high-level soccer can be very entertaining.
Germany’s top league features plenty of quality clubs and players. Until this weekend, it was the only European league that restarted play.
The action gets underway on Friday and continues through Sunday. In total, there are nine matches to wager on.
Bayern Munich is one of the top teams in all of Europe and typically gets a lot of attention at sportsbooks. This week, they’re facing another tough test in Borussia Mönchengladbach.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Bayern is a sizable favorite. The online sportsbook lists it at -320, with Mönchengladbach at +700.
Since returning to the field, Bayern has won all five of its matches, while only conceding four goals. It is seven points ahead of second-place Borussia Dortmund.
Even though it may be difficult to catch the leaders, Dortmund must keep producing in order to secure its position in the top four. Each of these teams earns a bid to next year’s Champions League for finishing that high.
Dortmund shouldn’t struggle too much this weekend. It takes on Fortuna Düsseldorf, which currently sits in 16th in the table.
FanDuel gives Dortmund odds of -290 to win and shows Düsseldorf at +700.
The only other squad that’s in contention for the title is RB Leipzig. Its gets the week going on Friday afternoon against TSG Hoffenheim.
Leipzig is coming off a poor performance last week and should be looking to right the ship. It’s the favorite on FanDuel with odds of -230, whereas Hoffenheim is at +550.
La Liga’s Return To WV Sportsbooks
The Bundesliga won’t dominate all of the soccer betting this weekend, though. On Thursday, Spain’s La Liga is back for the first time.
Unlike the German league, there is not just one dominant side in La Liga. At the moment, Barcelona is atop the standings, just two points above rival Real Madrid.
Sevilla and Real Sociedad fill out the rest of the top four.
Despite having a goal differential of only +10, Sevilla is in third place all by itself. It will take the pitch Thursday afternoon in the league’s return.
Sevilla will take on Real Betis in what could prove to be a very good game. According to BetMGM Sportsbook, Sevilla is the favorite at -115 and Real Betis has odds of +290.
On Saturday, Barcelona takes on Mallorca. BetMGM shows Barcelona as big favorites in their first match since March. It’s at -358, while Mallorca is listed at +775.
The online sportsbook also includes a number of game and player props. You’re able to wager on Lionel Messi scoring a goal at any point in the match at -167.
Unfortunately, Real Madrid fans will have to wait until Sunday to bet on their squad. Madrid will battle Eibar in its return.
Again, BetMGM has this match as a potentially lopsided affair. Real is favorites at -400, with Eibar at +950.
Just like with the Barcelona game, bettors can take a prop bet on whether or not Karim Benzema scores. He has odds of -150 to score at any time, and +250 to put in the first goal.
