WV Online Sports Betting Fans Eager For Live Sports: Tee Up The Match And A Free Bet

Posted on May 21, 2020 - Last Updated on June 2, 2020

After months of basically zero live sports, bettors finally have some options at West Virginia sportsbooks.

Among the first sporting events back are special golf outings, like this weekend’s The Match: Champions for Charity.

Beyond just having another sport to wager on, DraftKings Sportsbook is offering a new promotion based around the event.

If you bet $20 on the golf match, the online sportsbook will give you a free $20 live wager.

The Champions for Charity match features some of the biggest stars in golf and football. All-time greats Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson pair up with legendary NFL quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

The event is intended to raise money for several charities involved with COVID-19 relief. The four participants, as well as WarnerMedia, are donating $10 million to several causes.

Causes include:

  • Direct Relief
  • American Red Cross
  • Save Small Business
  • All In Challenge

Woods will form a team with Manning, while Mickelson and Brady will oppose them. The Match takes place on Sunday, May 24, live from Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida.

This is a great opportunity for golf fans to place bets on their favorite sport even before the PGA Tour officially returns. The pro tour is set to start back up with the Charles Schwab Challenge on June 11.

Although retail WV sportsbooks are still closed, the online sports betting apps showcase odds for the event.

With DraftKings, bettors can double their bets for free. Once you’ve wagered a total of $20 on any of the available markets, the online sportsbook provides you an additional $20 to use as a live bet.

Let’s take a deeper look at all of the rules for this weekend’s golf event and breakdown DraftKings’ newest promo.

DraftKings’ The Match – Bet and Get

If you plan on betting on this weekend’s Champions for Charity, DraftKings is the place to do so.

To be eligible for the promotion, you must first opt-in. The only other requirement is that you accumulate at least $20 in bets on the golf match.

This can be done with multiple wagers and not just one single $20 bet. Qualifying bets can include live markets as well as parlays. However, you cannot use previous free bets, cash-out bets, voided bets and other odds boosts.

Another condition is that all bets must have odds of -250 or longer. This would include options listed at -150 or +125.

Once you’ve hit the qualifying minimum, DraftKings will credit your account with a free $20. You must use these funds on a live market during The Match.

The free live bet will expire at the end of the golf event.

The only other constraint is that you’re physically located in one of the following states:

  • West Virginia
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Colorado

This promo is available for everyone with a DraftKings account, both existing and new customers. The deal begins on Thursday, May 21.

Golf betting on Tiger and Phil

Since this event isn’t your typical PGA Tour tournament, there are a few different regulations to take note of.

It will consist of 18 holes of golf, but the rules are different throughout.

The first nine holes will be played with a four-ball format, also known as best ball. The back nine will involve a modified version of an alternate shot. Each player will hit their respective tee shot, and then play alternate shot after choosing the better drive.

There are additional in-match challenges in place, too.

According to reports, the fifth hole of the event will be played by each player while using only one club. This should prove to make things extremely difficult and interesting.

Medalist Golf Club’s fifth is a par four, measuring 404 yards from the furthest tee box.

Another wrinkle includes former NBA star and TNT analyst Charles Barkley. It’s been reported that he will also make an appearance and actually compete during a hole.

Barkley is wagering $200,000 for a charity donation that he can complete the given hole shooting bogey or better.

The best part about this event, besides the funds going to good causes, is the fact that every player will be wearing microphones. This will allow them to talk with each other, along with the announcers covering the action.

The Match: Champions for Charity gets underway on Sunday, with coverage beginning at 2 p.m. ET. You can watch every shot live on several TV stations, including TNT, TBS and truTV.

Betting Odds At WV Sportsbooks

Even though this isn’t a regular PGA Tour event, sportsbooks are accepting bets. DraftKings, as well as FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook, offer a wide variety of odds already listed.

You’re able to wager on standard match lines or pick from the expansive props available. Each online sportsbook is sure to provide plenty of live betting markets, as well.

Currently, DraftKings shows Woods and Manning as the favorites to win the event. It offers the following odds:

  • Woods/Manning -225
  • Mickelson/Brady +180

There are more than enough match props and specials in addition to the standard odds. DraftKings includes markets for who will be leading after specific holes and which hole will determine the match winner.

Right now, you can bet on the following odds:

Leader after 12 holes

  • Woods/Manning -120
  • Mickelson/Brady +175
  • Tie +450

Leader after 15 holes

  • Woods/Manning -137
  • Mickelson/Brady +175
  • Tie +550

Hole on which the match will be won

  • Holes 15-17 +110
  • 18th hole or extra holes +175
  • 14th hole or earlier +300
